The piece of cake went “plop” on the floor, but the twinkle in his eyes eclipsed the mess. “Momma,” he said running to me, not even aware his plate was empty. “Puppy there,” he said pointing and charging. Paper plate went flying and boy and puppy met in a happy tumble.
“Does he understand the puppy is yours?” my cousin asked.
“I don’t think so. It won’t be hard for him to figure out.”
A girl the same age joined the puppy and boy and all three tumbled around the yard.
“Things worked out well, with you being able to get the puppy now and us having Sophie’s birthday party.”
“Mm hm,” I answered, not paying much attention to her words. I was remembering my cousin and I tumbling around another yard with a whole pack of puppies.
“Just like us,” she said.
I smiled and said, “I hope they’re just as close.” She wrapped an arm around me and squeezed.
