Flatland

[Fiction; word count 131]

The hills dropped away, the landscape opening, allowing my soul to unfold and spread out. I’d been away long enough that I’d forgotten how good it feels to be home.

Gone were the rolls of verdure that made it feel like I was at the bottom of a bowl. Instead, the horizon went on and on and the sunset was an elongated affair; once the sun was gone that western horizon was still lighter than the rest of the sky for hours.

Nothing got in the way of seeing the black velvet night sky. Those diamonds in the sky were gorgeous. I’d like a tiara of those, please. Breezes ruffle my hair and I inhale deeply, smelling only the sweet autumn grasses. I exhale my worries and walk along much lighter.
